Dr Barney Glover, Director of Research and Development at CurtinUniversity said the technology uses a process based on a combination of multi-component refrigeration and compression cycles. Liquid nitrogen is used to achieve temperatures down to -160oC with relatively few equipment items. The nitrogen cycle inefficiency at this scale has always been a problem, but in this process, nitrogen is liquefied under pressure, continually being cycled between the compressor and LNG production chamber for maximum efficiency.

The small demonstration Micro-Cell unit (small enough to fit on the back of a standard utility) is now available for demonstration at CurtinUniversity. Dr Glover said that the unit cost of the facility is less than $US18 per million cubic feet. Initial estimates carried out by the design team show that new LNG micro-plants have a potential efficiency cycle of around 25 per cent better than conventional large-scale facilities.
